Richard E. Scott, II

Richard E. Scott, II passed away on September 22, 2026 in his home of 30+ years at the age of 81.

Born on December 26, 1944, in Bluefield, Virginia, Richard was the son of the late Ruth Scott and Richard Scott Sr.

Richard is survived by his wife, Diana L. Scott; his children, Richard Scott Jr. III and Lisa Alford; his grandsons, Justin Alford and Trey Alford; and his great-grandchildren, Eisley Alford, Harmony Alford, Everleigh Alford, and Emerie Alford. He is also survived by his brother, Mark Scott; his sister, Carla Green; many nieces and nephews; extended family; and the many friends he made throughout his life.

Richard lived a life defined by family, service, hard work, friendship, and plenty of laughter. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend to many, and a proud soldier.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army for more than 30 years, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. His decades of military service were an important part of his life and reflected the dedication, work ethic, and commitment that he carried into everything he did.

That same drive followed Richard throughout his civilian career. He spent more than 30 years with BellSouth, retiring as a team supervisor. But apparently, Richard wasn’t particularly interested in the “retired” part of retirement. Always one to stay busy, learn something new, and take on another challenge, he began a second career as a real estate broker, where he became well known and successful within the real estate industry.

Sitting still simply wasn’t Richard’s style. Whether he was working, learning something new, tackling a woodworking project, or finding the next thing that needed to be done, Richard liked having a project and a purpose.

Outside of work, he enjoyed golf, football, woodworking, a cold beer, socializing, and spending time with his dogs. He was funny, generous, a natural storyteller and—as those closest to him can attest—a little more stubborn with age. Most of all, Richard enjoyed making people laugh.

And his sense of humor stayed with him right to the end.

When his family asked who he wanted to handle his cremation, Richard answered in a way only Richard could:

“Whoever has the first match.”

Even at the end, he was still making his family laugh.

He leaves behind more than a list of accomplishments. He leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, friendships, lessons, and memories shared with the people who loved him.

Those stories will undoubtedly be told for years to come, probably with a cold beer nearby and plenty of laughter—and knowing Richard, that’s exactly how he would want to be remembered.

As per Richard's wishes, there will be no service or viewing. He wished to be cremated. Richard will, however, be laid to rest with Military Honors at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida. The day and time of services at the cemetery will be announced by Tillman Funeral Home & Crematory at a later date.
