Gloria Joyce Kucera Proctor

With deep love, heavy hearts, and profound gratitude for a life richly lived, we celebrate and honor Gloria Joyce Kucera Proctor — our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 96 in Atlantis, Florida.

To sum up ninety-six years in words is no small task. Her story — spanning nearly a century of love, grace, resilience, and boundless devotion to her family — is a treasure that will live on in our hearts forever.

Gloria was born March 2, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Maria Clarette Froula and Frank Kucera. She grew up in a predominantly Czechoslovakian neighborhood in Cleveland alongside her parents and older brother, Frank. There, she enjoyed spending time working in her mom’s beauty shop. As a young child she vacationed in Miami, staying in a cottage built by her father in the 1930s. Gloria later attended Andrews Boarding School in Willoughby, Ohio.

At the start of World War II, Gloria moved to Miami with her mother while her father joined the Navy and moved overseas to the South Pacific. A spirited teenager, she enjoyed time with her friends and helping at the Opa-locka Naval Air Base Canteen, serving and dancing with the airmen. She split her time between Miami and Cleveland, where she attended Beauty School during summer visits with her father.

During one such visit, Gloria met her husband, Bill, in Cleveland. They both returned to Miami where they fell in love, then soon after married on September 15, 1948, in Plymouth, Michigan. They began their life together in Dearborn, Michigan, where Gloria stepped into her favorite role — motherhood — with the births of Billy in 1949 and Bobby in 1950.

Gloria once wrote about becoming a mother, "The overwhelming deep love one feels for this little one... so small, so sweet, so loved. So amazing! I’m a mom! At that moment, life as you have known it changes."

After a short return to Miami, Gloria and her family settled back in Michigan, buying a home in Okemos and planting a Christmas tree farm in Northern Michigan. Many family memories were made tending the tree farm. During these years, Gloria and Bill were blessed with three more precious children — Lindy, Dougie, and Sandy. Her home was always the heart of the family — a place filled with love, laughter, and constant support.

In 1962, due to Bill's health, they relocated to Boynton Beach, Florida. There, Gloria raised her five children — along with an adventurous household of monkeys, goats, ducks, snakes, rabbits, dogs, cats, mice, and birds. Over the years, she worked at a local beauty shop, dress shop, and dance studio. Her children were the joy of her life, and her passion was being dedicated to providing and caring for them. After her children were grown, she spent years working as a receptionist at an eye doctor in Delray. She thoroughly enjoyed spending quality time throughout her life with her adult children as well as frequent sleepovers with her grandchildren. In her own words, Gloria’s life was filled with cherished moments and joys beyond measure. Watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow up and sharing their lives had been a privilege and blessing, bringing purpose, pride, and much love to light up her life.

Gloria lived a life of remarkable perseverance and strength, enduring hardships while quietly providing for her family through every challenge. She continued to welcome and support her children throughout their adult lives and cherished her time together with them. Her love never stopped! Inquisitive, meticulous, and an extraordinary listener, she delighted in simple pleasures — feeding the birds, caring for her cats, sharing love with all the family pets, and cherishing every milestone of her growing family.

Gloria is now reunited with those who passed before her: her parents, Frank and Marie Kucera; her step-father, William Torrey; brother, Frank Joseph Kucera; husband, William Harry Proctor; and her cherished son, William Frank Proctor.

She is survived by four of her children, Robert (his wife Jan), Lindy (her husband John), Doug, and Sandy; as well as her 12 cherished grandchildren: Heather (Frank), Bridget, Christine (Matt), Bobby (Samantha), Mary (Bob), Betsy, Jimmy (Ilia), Andrew, Paul, Joseph (Pilar), Philip, and Doug (Lindsay); and 13 great-grandchildren: Frankie, Maddox, Preston, Piper, Phoenix, Dylan, Maxon, Emma, Grant, Harlow, Lupe, Cecilia, and Eden, as well as her loving cousin June Cratty; daughter-in-law Luanne (Proctor) Haag and extended family and friends.

At 96 years old, she left her family with the greatest gift of all: beautiful memories, her stories, and her personal words of wisdom to guide future generations:

"My advice to my children and grandchildren is to always try to be honest, considerate, and kind to others. Help where help is needed. Knowledge is power, seek it. Embrace, trust, and love who you are—you are unique and special. Don’t let the fast-forward pace of the world today deprive you from savoring ‘THE NOW.’ Always remember life is as fragile as a snowflake; treat it with prayer."

She lived an incredible life, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and joy. While she will be deeply missed, her wisdom, strength, and spirit will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew her. Rest in peace and love, Gloria. Your journey was truly magnificent.
