Elmer D. Mercado

Elmer Mercado, age 71, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Elmer lived a life defined by honesty, hard work, kindness, and an unforgettable sense of humor. He had a remarkable gift for making people smile and laugh, a quality he carried with him even in the final days of his life.

Born on September 11, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Elmer was the beloved son of the late Hermeregildo ("Omerejo") Mercado and Olalia ("Lala") Rosa. Growing up in Philadelphia, he loved playing basketball and handball with friends on the neighborhood streets.

Throughout his life, Elmer worked as a dental technician, a milkman, and later spent many years as a building superintendent. After a long day's work, he enjoyed relaxing with friends at the neighborhood bar. Weekends were often spent cooking breakfast for his family, and Sundays meant cheering on his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys. He also loved driving his pickup truck and challenging himself with crossword puzzles.

Elmer had a special way of making everyone feel welcome. As a youth sports coach for his son's teams, he encouraged, supported, and inspired countless young athletes. He treasured playing board games, cards, and dominoes with his son and their friends, creating memories filled with laughter and friendly competition. A talented handyman, Elmer was always the first to lend a helping hand and seemed able to fix just about anything. His quick wit, infectious smile, and joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He and his wife shared a love of dancing, and he especially enjoyed singing along to his favorite salsa classics and oldies.

After retiring, Elmer moved to Florida, where he embraced the sunshine and enjoyed spending time swimming in the pool.

Elmer will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his beloved wife, Pat; his son, Alexis; his daughter-in-law, Abigail; and his cherished granddaughter, Ariel. He is also survived by his brother, Hector; his in-laws; his beloved compadres, Victor and Annette; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation in Elmer's memory.
